There were 75 entries in the races this year, with 21 chundan vallams racing against each other in six heats. The racetrack was 1.1 km long. However, the energy from the race spilled over beyond the racetrack itself. Spectators lined the banks at various locations for days before the event. There were thousands of tourists in Alappuzha taking pictures of every stroke on the oars, and premium seating in the finishing pavilion sold out before the race occurred.
